My favourite literary food is Epeli Hau’ofa’s collection of life works, such as ‘We are the Ocean.’ I admire his work, spirit and worldview very much. He was born and lived in PNG for a long time, and I have noticed that he tried to address some internal racism between Mela, Pola, and Micro blackfellas.

Among others like him, Professor ‘Ilaisa Futa ‘i Ha’angana Helu (Tonga), Jean Marie Tjibaou (Kanak), Bernard Narakobi (PNG), Merata Mita (New Zealand), Linda Smith (New Zealand), Konai Helu Thaman (Tonga), and others challenged pervasive Western materialistic and scientific paradigms through their work. These are our ancestors, prophets and thinkers who connect the world we have lost (or are losing) to the strange colonized world we now face.

It would be great if the governments in Oceania turned all of their writing into a curriculum for kindergarten, primary, and high school. In fact, Epeli prefers the term Oceania rather than the Pacific.

As soon as children reach high school and university, it is too late; their worldview has already been reprogrammed. Therefore, we need to start with children’s books. Of course, we should not accept everything they say as gospel truth, but we should read and study their works critically, just as Western children study Homer, Plato, Socrates, Pythagoras, Aristotle, Copernicus, Thomas Aquinas, Shakespeare, Galileo, Newton, David Hume, Hobbes, Descartes, Bacon and so on………

“There but for the grace of God”, it is selfish of Marape and high disregard of PNG own interests to abandon West Papua to what he knows is internationally illegal abuse.
For Asia Pacific Report readers, I can offer my research to help resolve the common misunderstanding of what our governments have done to West Papua in and since 1962. Under the 1945 Charter of the United Nations, colonies (non-self-governing territories) are no longer property owned by the foreign power, colonies are now a “trust” either under Chapter XI (see “sacred trust” in article 73), or under Chapters XII and XIII; in either case the purpose of the trust is to assist the colony to “independence” (article 76b) or “a full measure of self-government” (article 73). Most colonies fall under article 73, which means ONLY the UN member administrating the colony is subject to the legal duties of assisting the colony to independence and making yearly reports to the UN about the Colony; but Article 76 and all of Chapters XII & XIII are applicable if the United Nations has accepted responsibility for the colony, and if the UN accepts this trust relationship it remains until the colony becomes both independent and a “fellow member” of the United Nations (see article 78).
On 21st September 1962 our governments voted to subject West New Guinea to United Nations administration as requested in a trusteeship agreement popularly known as the ‘New York Agreement’; Chapter XII declares a number of requirements for a trusteeship agreement, and the ‘New York Agreement’ fulfills each of the requirement including article 85 part 1 authorisation by the UN General Assembly which we did in General Assembly resolution 1752. The DIFFERENCE between our trusteeship of West Papua and other trusteeships, is that the UN Secretary General (SG) did not do his job of telling the Trusteeship Council about the trusteeship agreement and General Assembly resolution 1752 authorisation, as article 85 part 2 requires the SG to do.
So for 61 years the Trusteeship Council has been unable to begin its article 87 and 88 duties preparing the yearly UN reports about West Papua, and therefore most UN members have become confused and easily mislead about the legal status.

**It’s Time for West Papua to Seek New Allies**

The struggle of the West Papuan people for self-determination is not new. But what’s becoming increasingly clear is that regional alliances, particularly with the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), have not borne the fruit West Papua hoped for. As it stands, the dynamics at play within the MSG have made it apparent that their interests lie more with financial and political gains than with the genuine concerns and rights of the West Papuan people.

There’s a saying: “When one door closes, another one opens.” While West Papua’s relationship with the MSG may seem at a crossroads, this might just be the opportunity for the region to foster new alliances and seek support elsewhere.

Historically, West Papua has been seeking understanding and assistance mainly from Western powers and their allies. While there’s nothing wrong with this, the changing dynamics of world politics and power suggest that there might be more effective ways to push the West Papuan cause.

Enter the BRICS nations, an association of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Among these, China, with its rapidly growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region, presents a particularly interesting prospect. As the geopolitical landscape changes, it is crucial for West Papua to adapt and align itself with nations that not only have a significant influence on the world stage but also might be more amenable to its cause.

The BRICS nations, China in particular, have shown a proclivity to challenge the status quo of global power dynamics. Aligning with such nations could offer West Papua a new platform to voice its concerns and seek the support it so desperately needs.

Of course, any new alliance requires careful consideration. Aligning with the BRICS nations, especially China, will come with its own set of challenges and demands. But, given the unfruitful relationship with the MSG and their apparent prioritization of “money politics” over human rights, exploring new partnerships seems like a reasonable step forward.

In conclusion, as the narrative of global power shifts, so must West Papua’s strategy. It’s time for the region to rise up, take its movement to Jakarta’s doorstep, and find allies that resonate with its aspirations. The MSG’s recent actions might be a setback, but they could also be the impetus for a more significant and impactful change.

The quote from the Indonesia deputy foreign minister, Pahala Mansury, is a classic! In fact, I would like to nominate him for the international Joseph Goebbels Propaganda Award. Illegal invasion-occupation-annexation and six decades of the regions worst crimes against humanity that would have pleased the leader in master race rants, Adolf Hitler. Honourable?!?
There is no difference between Indonesia’s invasions of West Papua and East Timor other than the number of years in military occupation and in the numbers of indigenous victims of Indonesia’s genocidal indigenous welfare policies, and the fact that East Timor, now Timor-Leste, attained liberation after Indonesia was forced out in 1999.
I have no doubt at all that, after Australia’s role in assisting the East Timorese to liberation, Jakarta stated to Canberra “we will go to war over any attempt to liberate West Papua”. It is time to honour this nation’s blood debt to the Papuan race!
The Australian Government, ever the master of the diplomacy of appeasement, cowardice, and dishonour, will no doubt be honouring Pahala Mansury with the Order of Australia for outstanding and exceptional achievements – an award that now has the same muddy and bloody shine to it as the Joseph Goebbels Propaganda Award.
Liberation is the only solution.

This has been going on for decades. OPM-TPNPB, is the past, present, and future of West Papua’s war of liveration. But you already know this. You also know that MSG has been corrupted since the very first year Indonesia was admitted as associate member. What I am most surprised about is that your various electorates allow MSG corruption to be just as unaccountable as is Indonesia’s crimes against humanity. Put aside your sadness – an act of NO CONFIDENCE begins with a resignation declaring the Vanuatu government and every MSG nation as morally and ethically bankrupt as Indonesia. In the past, Madang was so clean, famous, crime-free, and the home of many European visitors, colonisers, and migrants (Germans, British, Americans, and Japanese all left their mark on Madang). In Madang, the famed Russian anthropologist, humanist, biologist, and scientist Nicholai Nikolaevich Miklouho-Maclay lived with the Tui people while advocating for Indigenous Papuan rights to be free from European colonization. Local politicians steal all the money, the Chinese control all the businesses, and only a few Aussies run their businesses there. Locals have been abandoned on the streets, without jobs and without money. Despite the high presence of foreign influence, the local population of Madang has suffered greatly, left destitute with few opportunities for work or economic stability. This has created a level of desperation and despair among the local population, with many feeling powerless to fight back against the unfair circumstances they are faced with. Papua New Guinea’s central government and provincial governments must feel ashamed for what is happening in Madang.

A good write up of the popular / diplomatic account; unfortunately betrayal did not start or end with the United Nations, and the West Papuan diaspora need to accept this reality. Villains only need a couple (not hoards) of criminal allies, from 1959 to 1986 in the US Indonesia had the help of Freeport director Robert Lovett, he alone was enough to whisper in the ear and misguide the US Presidents and policy advisers without revealing his personal interest in West Papua’s fate. At the United Nations after the death of Dag Hammarakjold, Indonesia had U Thant and no doubt also C.V Narasimhan perverting UN conduct in relationship to West Papua. And in likewise Vanuatu and elsewhere Indonesia only needs one or two people whispering misleading advice while concealing their own Indonesian agenda.
At first a call for ‘unity’ might sound good, but a demand for unity is not. Back around 1991, again in 2008 and again in 2014 Vanuatu has demanded that West Papuan prove unity as a condition for Vanuatu assistance, each time the Vanuatu demand has created Papuan disruption, conflicts and political competitions, and each time Vanuatu has reneged on the promised support for independence.
Vanuatu is a friend not an enemy, but obviously there have been one or two people misguiding Vanuatu policy for benefit of Indonesian control in Papua. It does not matter who were or are the people still whispering in the Vanuatu’s government’s ear, the important thing is to denounce the deception of the false for for unity.
Vanuatu, New Zealand and other nations legally owe West Papua independence because our governments acting as the United Nations annexed West Papua and then appointed Indonesia to “administrate” West Papua.
And our governments morally owe West Papua our assistance even if there is only one person asking. We do NOT have any right to demand West Papua do what our nations can not, find a person or body that speaks for every single person and fraction within a nation.
Some people in West Papua want to be Indonesians, but we do NOT have a right to impose that choice on others, our governments voted to annex West Papua and therefore we owe the people and nation help in exercising their right of self-determination that we in 1962 took from them.

Over the past week, the ZB coverage of Hurricane Gabrielle has been beyond negligent and was irresponsible. You can point at Hosking, Hawkesbury, Woodham and Allan, but that would suggest a culture issue, so look to Station management and owners. They appear to have been very quiet. Where are the apologies, explanations and future expectations that listeners deserve. Where are they? One would have to say the culture starts at the top, and why should they be concerned. If that is the ZB culture, may it Rest In Peace. Surely that is not NZ values.

Mr Richard Naidu has very well articulated and cleared the air on each point on the allegations of Mr Saiyad khaiyum, the GS of FF.
What is interesting is whether Mr Khaiyum remains general secretary when he accepted the position as a member of COC and participated in the first meeting. He is deemed to have resigned as the General Secretary of Fiji First. If he subsequently resigned from COC, he does not return as GS since he is deemed to have lost his position. He cannot be allowed to masquerade as the GS of FF. The SoE should be asked to make a ruling on this matter.

West Papuans indigenous people should be decolonize from Indonesia occupation. These unrest, slow genocides of the Melanesian ethnic group will never end. The Melanesian have strong cultural ties with land, and environment, the feeling of being belong is a strong bond. The morning star flag itself is popular in the Pacific region today, flown by lot of west Papua freedom support group. Well done Murray for keeping such a calm cool patient demeanor in the face of militant police harrassment. It is depressing to see our NZ police force having to arm themselves with guns to deal with increasing numbers of dangerous people with weapons.
We have been indoctrinated with the American culture of guns and violence for the last 30 years as part of the Right wing
Neo-liberal free market rules economics. This allows enormous amounts of crime, violence and murder ‘as entertainment’ on TV, movie, computer, every kid’s cellphone screen and social media feed.
Most people seem unaware of the cultural programming as a major cause of increasing violence in real life. NZ is becoming almost as sick, fearful and violent as the US as too many people copy their gun culture while gun sales rake in great profits.
The last few years of thuggery has grown worse with attacks on police and so of course they must be armed to protect themselves. Thus we now see the brazen carrying of guns in most NZ news items as the ‘new normal’.
Thankfully the PM has tried to curb this after the Mosque massacre by stricter gun laws but we need a re-vivified Peace movement to get the gun culture off our screens, and out of our Real Life communities.

The Human Rights Commission could remedy the tragic West Papua situation if it would ask the United Nations to obey article 85(2) of its Charter which since September 1962 has required that the UN issue of General Assembly resolution 1752 be reported to the agenda of the Trusteeship Council. Then the Council can begin preparing the normal UN yearly reports about West Papua which international law (articles 87 & 88) require the Council provide. It is only because of the abnormal UN conduct refusing to allow its left hand (Trusteeship Council) know what its right hand (General Assembly) has done, that the international looting and any extrajudicial executions have been able to continue for the past fifty year nine years.

The problem with climate change, the unrecognised problem, is that the general population is not responding to oft repeated and increasingly strident warnings.

And it is not just warnings; even the most striking examples of its impact today; the destruction of the rain forests, the melting of glaciers and ice caps, the bleaching of the great coral reef in Australia, forest fires, droughts, and floods, all these are having little impact on public opinion. But why is this happening ?
