A new task is ahead for the leadership, following in the footsteps of the founder of the independence movement, Jean Marie Tjibaou. Following his dictum, “nothing is inevitable in politics”, he told the French: “Tant qu’il y aura un Kanak en Nouvelle-Calédonie, on vous emmerdera avec l’indépendance – so long as there is just one Kanak in New Caledonia we will be pushing you over independence.”
