The article by Yamin Kogoya a young West Papuan academic sparkeked reaction from Jakarta. The article touches on many aspects of life in the West Papuan society to support his synopsis on terrorism introduced by Indonesia in West Papua. Terrorism is a tactic used by warring parties in any conflict situation to brake the moral of the enemy and is known thruout human history. For West Papua in particular it is the Indonesian Military that used terror as strategy to force West Papuans to submit to Indonesian rule. OPM was born in July 1964 as reaction by the Papuan people against the annecsation of West Papua thruough President Sukarno’s Decree No 8. They knew that the Papuan people against the annexation of their country and the only way they could maintain control is by violent repression. The Military have to maintain violece to justify the need for their presence. According to Indonesia’s Human Right Commission there had been 48 (old report) Operation Tumpas or Operation Annohilation since annexation. BB’s video tittled Blood on the Cross susincly described one this operations in the case of Mapenduma in 1996. It was a young survival of Mependuma who lead TPNPB in the slying of 19 Indonesians in the Nhduga case. Yamin’s argument of Indonesia made terrorist out of West Papuans could be clearly seen in ths case.
