The nationally elected New Guinea Council held an emergency night session which on morning of 19th October 1961 revealed their manifesto of independence asking their hundreds of communities to unite as a new nation West Papua under their newly designed Morning Star flag. Thanks to an Indonesian diplomatic move on 17th September 1961 the popular Mongi Slim of Tunisia was no longer able to be nominated as the new UN Secretary General after Hammarskjold was killed on the 18th and so it was Burma’a U Thant (friend of Indonesia & India) who became the new UN Secretary General, after which India invaded Goa and once the Security Council proved unable to denounce that invasion, Indonesia began another invasion of West Papua. As with previous efforts, the Papuans arrested the Indonesian soldiers but this time the new Secretary General asked the US to help get the Dutch to sign an Indonesian request for the United Nations to invade and appoint its choice of administrator for West Papua, a job which Indonesia said it would perform free of charge. And with the new UN Secretary General watching OUR governments were asked to authorise this United Nations action, and the rest including suffering and oppression as they say is history; courtesy of our General Assembly res.1752.
